A tribute to the royalty of the great plains sky and land, Ancient Monarch depicts the skull of Bison antiquus, the megafauna ancestor of today’s American bison, wreathed in milkweed and attended by a court of endangered Monarch butterflies.
The ancient bison is extinct, today, and its modern descendant nearly followed it after targeted culling by colonists and believers in Manifest Destiny who recognized the species as a keystone to the wellbeing of both Native American tribes and the wildlife in the area. But with protection and care, the bison is making a comeback, and with the same respect and tending, milkweed and the monarch will flourish widely again, too.
Printed in the US on heavyweight textured acid free paper. 14” x 11”
