It Thirsts At Night: North American Megafauna Project, #777

Desmodus stocki and Queen of The Night

This night-dweller only fully emerges after dark, silent and beautiful, stirring to feed on the life fluids of the host species it affixes to.

Oh, think I was talking about the bat skull inside that gorgeous flower? Well, partially, yes. But also that flower, too. It’s the Queen of the Night, a vine that climbs larger plants like trees, and burrows into the host plant to tap into its xylem and phloem, the “sap veins”. It’s an endangered species that only blooms at night, and is native to areas of the US Southwest, Mexico, and into South America, where the megafauna species the Stock’s Vampire Bat once lived, making it a perfect and beautiful accompaniment to that little prehistoric blood-drinker.

11” x 14”

Printed in the US on heavyweight linen-texture, acid free paper that was produced with certified renewable energy.

Handle gently to avoid damaging this print, and frame using archival materials for longevity of display.
