We learn from animal history as much as we do human, and the lesson from the now-extinct Short Faced Bear, Arctodus simus, is that the ability to hibernate - resting in a timely manner and making sure to prepare for this rest beforehand - is what can keep us from fading away. Most modern-day bears in North America today hibernate annually, spending the warmer months of the year prepping for this long rest. Arctodus’ lacked this survival trait, and today its lone descendant, the spectacled bear, is found only in the warmer climes of South America.
