THE SAME SKY - THE FLORIDA BLACK WOLF
Lithe, limber, fur the color of brackish water, of moonless nights, of deep mud. The perfect nocturnal predators. This isn't a description of a creature in a fantasy story. It’s a swamp wolf.
Once, the Florida black wolf, Canis rufus floridanus, was one of the higher predators of the deep southern ecosystem, up to the beginning of the 19th century even those down in the panhandle hearing a lonesome howl at night.
That may sound strange as, nowadays, wolves are widely considered a more northern species. But subspecies of wolves have through time adapted to almost every nook of North America.
Black wolves were, as the name suggests, the darkest of North American wolves, and one of the smallest, adapted to deep shadows, tangled undergrowth, sweltering heat, and murky waters.

NATURAL HISTORY FACT:
The color of a wolf’s pelage (fur coat) is made by its guard hairs. Like many furred wild animals, wolves have two layers of fur: the softer, dense undercoat that serves as insulation and is fully shed every year, and the longer, wiry, more permanent guard hairs that contain the pigmentations that gives each wolf its unique coloring.
The Florida black wolf’s melanistic (very dark) coloring helped protect it against strong sunlight’s harmful UV rays.
