SMALL AND WILD - AMAMI RABBIT

Five to six pounds is a small size to carry a history that stretches back to the Pleistocene, but the Amami Rabbit (Petagalus furnessi) does so on just two, also diminutive, islands of Japan.

A direct descendant of ancient rabbits that once lived across much of mainland Asia, the Amami is also related to prehistoric species of rabbits with mythical sounding names like Pliopentalagus and Aztlanolagus that lived across other continents.

With a dark coat, small ears and eyes, and large claws, the Amami Rabbit is built for nocturnal living and cave dwelling, and feeds off a wide range of native flora in its native island habitat. It’s a primarily solitary creature, only scratching out little shelters for their young to hide in during the day, and filling its life mostly with foraging.

The closed island habitat of the Amami is why it has remained long enough on this earth to be considered a living fossil. But after millions of years of thriving, the Amami Rabbit has been reduced to a few thousand individuals across the islands of Amami and Tokuno.

NATURAL HISTORY FACT:

The lifestyle of the Amami rabbit with its lack of permanent, social living like in a warren and opportunistic feeding habits, is more akin to that of hares. Hares, of the Lepus genus, are the bigger, lankier cousins of rabbits, which fill ten different genuses that are found across every continent of the world except Antarctica.

Hares have longer pregnancies than rabbits, and are born with fur, open eyes, and the ability to run. Useful when you don’t have a burrow to hide in!
